Hurricane season and Icacos boat trips

The 2026 Atlantic season has been one of the quietest on record, and it still has six weeks to run. Here is how to book an Icacos boat day between now and the end of November without gambling on the weather.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from 1 June to 30 November. For anyone eyeing a boat to Cayo Icacos in late October or November, the question is not whether a storm is coming. It is how to book so that a bad forecast costs you nothing.

This post covers what the 2026 season has done so far, why mid-October still matters for the Caribbean, how the 24-hour cancellation windows on the Icacos listings work in practice, and what the boats do when the swell builds.

The quick answer

The 2026 season has been unusually quiet: the first hurricane only formed in early October, in the Gulf of Mexico. Mid-October is still a secondary peak for the Caribbean, and the season ends on 30 November. Book a trip with free cancellation, check the National Hurricane Center outlook two or three days out, and make your call before the 24-hour cutoff.

Where does the 2026 hurricane season stand in mid-October?

Quiet. NOAA forecast a below-normal season, El Niño kept storms weak, and the first hurricane did not form until early October, far from Puerto Rico.

In May, NOAA called for a below-normal season of 8 to 14 named storms, and in August it trimmed that to 7 to 13, citing a developing El Niño, according to the season summary on Wikipedia. El Niño raises wind shear over the Atlantic, which tears young storms apart before they organise. Saharan dust helped too.

By late September there had been six named storms and not one hurricane, a stretch that CBS12 called a rarity not seen in more than a century. The first hurricane, Isaias, formed in the Gulf of Mexico in early October and headed for the northern Gulf Coast. News 9 reported NOAA data showing it was the latest first hurricane in 121 years.

For Puerto Rico the season has mostly meant rain. The remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly in late August brought showers that partly eased a drought.

Is mid-October still risky for the Caribbean?

Yes, a little. NOAA describes a secondary peak in mid-October, mainly for the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

The famous peak is 10 September. NOAA's satellite service adds a second, smaller one in mid-October: as the open Atlantic cools and shear rises, activity shifts back toward the Caribbean and the Gulf, which stay warm. That is exactly where Isaias formed.

A quiet year does not switch that off. CBS12 put it plainly: "The quiet season does not mean the threat is over." October is also one of the rainiest months in Puerto Rico, though ToPuertoRico.org notes that most tropical showers are brief and followed by sun. A grey morning in Fajardo is not a reason to cancel. A named system tracking toward the Virgin Islands is.

How does free cancellation work if a storm shows up?

The Icacos listings we track state free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Watch the forecast and decide before that cutoff.

The listings for the Double Dip power catamaran, the full-day catamaran and the water taxi beach day each state free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. That is your safety valve. Book early for the date you want, then treat the day before as decision day.

The National Hurricane Center publishes a Tropical Weather Outlook that looks seven days ahead. If nothing is marked near Puerto Rico three days out, the odds of a storm cancelling your trip are slim. If something is, check again the next morning and cancel inside the window if it is still heading your way. Do not wait for the operator to call it. Once you are past 24 hours, what happens next is up to the operator, so read the booking page for what it says about weather cancellations.

What do captains do when the swell picks up?

They adapt the route. A listing may switch cays, a reef stop may move, and on rough days boats stay in port.

The sea, not the rain, decides most days. The Double Dip listing says it runs rain or shine. The full-day catamaran listing says the captain usually heads to Icacos but may choose Cayo Lobos or Palominos instead, which is how crews deal with wind and swell on the day.

When the sea gets bad enough, everything stops. The public ferries from Ceiba to Vieques were suspended on the night of 3 February 2026 because of deteriorating sea conditions, Metro Puerto Rico reported. The National Weather Service in San Juan issues small craft advisories when the sea is up; that is a good sign your boat may not go.

Remember that there is no dock on Icacos for tour boats. You climb down a ladder and wade ashore, and that step is the first thing a swell makes harder.

No dock on Icacos: guests wade in from the boat, which gets trickier when a swell runs.

Which kind of trip copes best with a showery autumn day?

A boat with a cabin. On Icacos itself there is no permanent shade or shelter, so a catamaran is your roof in a passing squall.

Discover Puerto Rico lists what the island lacks: no bathrooms, no food vendors, no permanent shade. On a water taxi day you are on the sand until your boat comes back, though the water taxi beach day listing does set up umbrellas. The Double Dip lists shaded seating, a restroom and a freshwater shower on board, which is what you want when a shower rolls through.

Our take for October and November: pick the boat, not the beach. Save the long day ashore for the dry months, which we cover in our post on the 2026-27 winter.

When does hurricane season end, and is November a good month for Icacos?

It ends on 30 November. November sits in the low season, with smaller crowds before the December rush.

ToPuertoRico.org puts May to November in the low season, with thinner crowds, and December to April in the high season. Late November can be a sweet spot: the hurricane window is closing, and the holiday crowds have not arrived yet.

One caution. The full-day catamaran listing says a smaller boat may run in the slow season, so check the boat named on your booking. Our comparison of the Icacos boat tours covers time ashore on each trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to book an Icacos boat trip during hurricane season?

Yes, if you book with free cancellation and watch the forecast. The Icacos listings we track state free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so check the National Hurricane Center outlook a few days out and decide before the cutoff.

When is the peak of hurricane season for Puerto Rico?

NOAA puts the main Atlantic peak around 10 September, with a secondary peak in mid-October mainly for the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. The season ends on 30 November.

What happens to an Icacos trip if the sea is rough?

The captain may change the plan. The full-day catamaran listing says it may stop at Cayo Lobos or Palominos instead of Icacos. On very rough days boats stay in port, so check the booking page for the operator's weather policy.

Has the 2026 hurricane season affected Puerto Rico?

Not with a hurricane so far. The remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly brought rain in late August, and the first hurricane of the season formed in the Gulf of Mexico in early October.
